I confess I read the review from the Guardian ("It is a gasping death-rattle of mediocrity, a miserable garden party of vapid good taste.") and confess that I was somewhat put off a visit this year! I always find it rather fun, if exasperating, seeking out the gems and thought how I would feel if I had put in this year and read that...Thank you for offering a counter balance and a great read.

Thanks for reporting back! I think the SE is a fantastic tradition. I've been a couple of times and we nearly bought something once. We regretted not doing so as soon as we got home. The things that critics dislike about it are the things I love. It's amazing to see artists of all types in one location. Art is not doing its job if it's not generating discussion, controversy or outrage so it's a good sign that the RA and its Summer Exhibition is as relevant as ever. Makes me want to jump on a train and get down there. Thanks Peter, I really enjoyed this.

I would definitely head down there....cheap day return or whatever. A good mag to read on the train, or finish that book you never did. Treat yourself! I tried to buy a mosaic by the Hackney Mosaic Project, which involves people with mental health issues and produces some really interesting works. Somebody beat me to it, but they sell on-line so I am following up.
